Baltimore band, The Perfects, influenced by local music culture

Every band thinks that they are the best of the best. But how do you really know? The Perfects, a local band, think that they have what it takes to be the best - and judging by their name, they probably do!

These guys are from Baltimore, and they've been around since 2005. Since then, they have released two albums, one is a self-titled EP, and the other is called Future Automatic, which is going to be re-released with two new songs.

The current lineup of the band consists of five people: Ric, Scotty, Dawson, Colleen and Andrew. In the band, I heard from Ric, and he told me about them.

The Perfects came about as the name because Ric liked it; simple as that. "…It stood out as feeling right," he says. Although the band itself has been around for a while, the current lineup has not.

"The first person I met was Dawson, who later introduced me to both Scotty and Colleen. He heard about The Perfects from my friend Keith Thompson, who happens to play session bass on our current album Future Automatic. Andrew came on board recently, and we met him when we did a show with his other band, Skydivers," Ric says.

Many bands nowadays are putting themselves under more than one genre, and The Perfects are no different. They place themselves in three categories: new wave, indie and rock.

Ric says that they picked this kind of music because, "I was not hearing the music I wanted to play, so I had to go out and make it myself."

For these guys, especially Ric, the local Baltimore scene plays a part in how they make their music. He says it "influences and inspires for sure. I love seeing bands on the local front who are either doing this for the love of music as we are, and/or pursuing a dream of trying to make a career. Anyone who works hard is an inspiration and that certainly has an influence." Bigger bands that influence them tend to come from older times. "Well, being a child of the 80s," says Ric, "the main influence of The Perfects is of that era with bands like New Order, The Cure, The Smiths and such. However, I love all music genres."

Like any band that has been around for some time, the sound of The Perfects has changed over time. "The band originally had two writers," says Ric. "The one writer departed, and that left myself to the writing duties. As a result, the sound has definitely matured and with the newer stuff, it's evolving quite nice. I am satisfied with it as an artist."

The two albums that the band has out have very different personal ideas to Ric. "Well, the first was an EP, and that was with the other former writer. I'd say for that EP, there was more of a stressful environment for me, and a lack of focus as to what the band was supposed to be.

The current album, however, Future Automatic, was the most fun and pleasurable experience I've ever had working on an album, and [it] really embodies what The Perfects' sound is. Part of that is attributed to me exploring the writing on my own, since it was something I had never done before, and that freedom was just so fantastic on so many levels. To see that finally come to fruition was a happy moment for me."

Future Automatic can now be downloaded for free on their website, www.theperfects.com. To access it, you have to enter your email address when asked to for the download link, check your inbox and from there you can open the email that has the link for the entire album and the artwork.

When they re-release their album Future Automatic, the updated version will have two brand new songs, along with remixes of some of the songs. The new songs were produced by Nic Hard (who helped with The Bravery and The Church) in New York. The remixed songs also use Grammy-award winner Chris Vrenna, Wu-Tang Clan featuring Cassidy, DJ Richard Vission and A23.

March is going to start a big thing for The Perfects, because in March, they will go on tour for the first time. During that time, they will be on tour with a band from Australia that calls themselves City Riots. Early in the tour, they will be playing in the Baltimore area - so try and see if you can go!

Besides being on tour, The Perfects have good plans for the future: write more music, tour and enjoy the ride. Words to live by, Ric.
