Basic pieces are great wardrobe investments

For the most part we're past the point of purchasing too-trendy clothes that will go out of style next season. With the "real world" knocking-a hem-banging on our doors, it may be time to build our wardrobes with basics that will last forever. By investing in a few versatile pieces (besides the little black dress), you can create a collection of closet staples that will transcend time and place. I've compiled a list of ten must-have items no wardrobe should be without.

Working from the bottom up, no closet is complete without a pair of tan pumps. Tan matches everything and creates a slimming effect by blending in with natural skin tones which can elongate the look of your legs. Stilettos in strong colors, no matter how sexy, often create a cut-off effect at the ankle that can make legs look shorter. The tan pump is a subtle solution to this pesky little problem.

My perfect pair of tan pumps comes courtesy of famed designer Max Azria. Azria's Leather Peep-Toe Pump, available on BCBG.com, proves he's seriously stepped up his shoe game in recent years. This stylish stiletto is available in both light and dark shades of tan, so they're fitting for any female looking to put her best foot forward.

Moving up and onward, the right pair of jeans is an obvious but lasting investment that can be dressed up, dressed down and worn with anything. A darker wash with a form fit creates a sleek and slimming look that can be taken from day to night in minutes, with the right accessories.

Though different cuts of denim flatter different shapes and sizes, a tapered jean that's super skinny around the ankle not only flatters many frames (especially petites), but easily tucks into boots and shows off a high heel. A brainchild of the designers behind J-Crew, the Madewell brand has taken comfortable, affordable and fashionable denim to a whole new level. Visit Madewell1937.com to find the ideal pair for your personal preferences.

Along with accenting your legs, in recent years leggings have become another basic building block to any clothing collection. A pair of leggings with a long sweater is a go-to outfit for those who just aren't sure what to wear, but the golden rule is to never forget to fully cover up your assets. I'm begging you.

As mentioned above, a long sweater is a simple solution to any style woes. Going into greater detail, a button up V-neck cardigan that hits a bit below the waist is another wardrobe-worthy item because it can transcend seasons and creates an illusion of height. A chic cardigan can be layered over anything from a miniskirt to jeans and a T-shirt, so it's versatile and can quickly take your outfit from crude to classic.

Along with the idea of layering, a quality T-shirt is another coveted closet item. I'll be first to admit I'm huge a fan of any Hane's tagless tee because they're great for the gym, but investing in a quality T-shirt is as important as investing in a quality pair of jeans.

I prefer V-neck T-shirts with a looser fit. Not only is throwing one on comfortable, it can casually mask any flaws your gorgeous self might unnecessarily scrutinize. I have an old obsession with Nation tees because this particular brand, which is a favorite of both Nicole Richie and Mary Kate Olsen, crafts vintage-inspired V-necks that I love lounging around in all day. Bloomingdale's has a substantial selection currently on sale online.

Another item that adds to any wardrobe is a statement watch. In my opinion the bigger the better; men's wear for women is one of my favorite fashion ideas to play around with. A stand-out watch-imagine a vintage timepiece your grandfather would have worn-adds instant polish to any outfit, and depending on your skin tone, gold (for darker skin tones) and silver (for lighter skin tones) look best. For an affordable and adorable option I suggest watches by Michael Kors. Visit MichaeKors.com for more information.

Mentioned as one of the top trends of this season, a ruffled blouse is also an easy fashion fix. A blouse with a bit of embellishment-nothing too extreme-is a major style staple because it can easily convert from work life to night life.

Whether you're interviewing, interning or you actually snagged that damn job, a ruffled blouse can be layered under almost anything and is an appropriate way to add pop to a professional outfit.

Expanding on the idea of work wear, both a fitted black blazer and a pencil skirt can become two key assets when it comes to your attire. Steer clear of the Hillary Clinton-esque matching skirt and jacket, but a basic blazer can clean up and adapt to any outfit, and a polished pencil skirt with a tucked in shirt (or ruffled blouse) can be worn inside the office or out at night. Available at Bloomingdale's, the Aqua brand has an extensive and affordable assortment of both items.

My final fashion must-have is a huge pair of stylish sunglasses. It comes as no surprise but sunglasses are a quick fix for frustrating days when you want to wash off the makeup but still step outside-or even inside if you don't mind getting stared at and are obsessed with shades like me. For an affordable pair that will complete any look, I recommend a classic Ray Ban aviator. Ray Bans last long and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. It's not difficult to find a style you can work it with.

There you have it: ten items that will have you looking très chic for a long time to come.
