On Jan. 25, 2009 Hollywood hosted the much anticipated SAG awards and famous faces, decked out in outrageous designer dresses, were seen in spades.
We saw gowns worn by the finest stars film and television have to offer, and I have taken on the difficult task of designating my favorite and least favorite looks of the night.
On the red carpet this year dresses were all about jewel tones. Actresses were decked out in every color from ruby red to emerald green, Marcia Cross rocked a gorgeous sapphire-blue Carolina Herrera strapless gown, but no one did blue better that night than Kate Winslet.
Winner in the Best Supporting Actress category for her movie The Reader, Winslet wore a form-fitting Narciso Rodriguez gown that looked flawless from every angle. Everything was right about her outfit from the electric-blue color of her gown to her simple accessories which included a stunning bracelet and an earring set, courtesy of Chopard.
Winslet's hair was also a hit; she showed off the strawberry-blonde she has been sporting recently with a simply swept-back up-do that looked natural and anything but stiff. It is quite the fashion faux pas when a person's hair looks like it took an entire can of hairspray to conjure up, and Winslet is an ideal example of what to do when it comes to keeping your locks natural-looking.
Another actress who showed up the competition as always was Angelina Jolie. She also graced the red carpet in blue (the color of the night), but her navy Max Azria gown complimented her even more than Brad Pitt's appearance on her arm.
Her skin was pale (showing that not everyone in Hollywood is obsessed with looking tan), and her hair was a chocolate brown shade, much softer than the almost jet black color she has been sporting for years.
Jolie's look was a mixture of the best of two decades of fashion. Her flowing dress and Tiffany & Co. gold hoop earrings brought to my mind the 70s-era, circa the prime of disco hotspots like Studio 54, and her hair had that gorgeous retro-50s volume so many girls covet.
Something tells me we will not be seeing her rocking the Elvira-look (remember that fashion tragedy at the Oscars in 2000?) anytime soon and I am incredibly happy about that.
My final favorite look of the night was Ms. Christina Applegate. Her emerald-green Emanuel Ungaro gown was a throwback to classic old-Hollywood glamour, but the structured draping at the top of her dress catapulted her look into something modern and more than appropriate for 2009. Like Winslet, Applegate's blonde locks were curled and delicately pulled out of her face to show off her show-stopping Lorraine Schwartz vintage-inspired earrings.
The intricate details of Applegate's Lorraine Schwartz jewelry brought her look to an entirely new level. Her waist-skimming diamond necklace was delicate enough so as not to take away from the design of the top of her gown, and her shimmery Swarovski clutch was the finishing touch that completed her outfit. She wore a significant amount of jewelry, but somehow her look remained simple-a recipe for looking chic.
And now for my least favorite look of the night from one of my favorite leading ladies. Hands down my choice for worst dressed at the SAG Awards is Eva Longoria.
Her dress reminded me of an overly-iced cupcake: something I would never have bitten into.
The pretty peach color of her Jenny Packham gown went well with Longoria's envy-invoking tan, but the overall silhouette would not flatter any woman's body. Since when did it become OK for a designer to put thick ruffles on the waistline of any garment?
There is never anything worse than over-emphasizing that particular area of the female figure so many women happen to be sensitive about.
The gown made Eva's midsection look disproportionate to the rest of her body, and with a woman about as thin as my pinky finger, the overwhelming ruffles of the dress were wrong in every way. Other than the disappointing silhouette of Longoria's dress, the neckline was too embellished and the gold snakeskin clutch she carried, while gorgeous, did not fit in well with rest of her ensemble. Her earrings were striking (they were H. Stern, how could they not be?), but the bottom line is that this look was way too much on way too little of a person.
Overall the theme of any red-carpet event is less is more. Winslet, Jolie and Applegate kept their looks understated and because of this they ended up making some of the strongest fashion statements on the red carpet we have seen all awards season. I cannot wait to see what fashion-forward choices the Oscars will bring.
