"It's good to get anything from home," said Bryan Adams, an Army veteran who was shot in Iraq, rehabilitated himself there, then went back out in the field. And he recently just received Halloween candy from kids and dentists back in New Jersey according to a local New Jersey online source. "It let's you know people back home are still thinking about you - they still care about you."
How did you end up spending your Halloween weekend? Living near one of the best Halloween hotspots in the nation, Fells Point, Halloween is undoubtedly one of the most popular holidays for Loyola students and people in the Baltimore area. However, as we turn the clocks back, recover from our evening, put away the costume we will likely never use again, and look towards the month of November, the Loyola community should be mindful of another holiday that many tend to overlooked almost every year; and more importantly the people who didn't get to celebrate Halloween like we did.
In the past, Veterans Day at Loyola hasn't gotten as much recognition as it arguably should. Sadly, the American flag in front of Humanities wasn't even at half staff last year. And while the holiday certainly isn't one that calls for a giant, cheerful celebration like Halloween and our other favorite holidays, Loyola students should at least be mindful of the significance the day holds for so many.
With nearly 250,000 soldiers serving throughout the Middle East, including Iraq and Afghanistan, November 11 is a time to recognize those brave men and women fighting on behalf of our country and our freedom. It is also obviously a time to appreciate the significant sacrifices they have all made for us, whether it has been several years overseas or their lives. Whether you stand by or are opposed to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the men and women of the armed forces, along with their loves ones, epitomize the Jesuit ideal of being men and women for others. So on November 11, try and find some way to let soldiers like Bryan Adams know we still care about and honor him.
