As the year begins so do the commericals for all of the upcoming movies. This year is shaping up to be the year of fairy tales, superheroes and beloved books. Though there are many movies to choose from, here are 10 that you should not miss this year.
1-Snow White and the Huntsman
There are two remakes of this classic fairytale coming out this year. This version is an intense, military-like rendition of the Disney story. Kristen Stewart's Snow White, under the guidance of the huntsman, played by Chris Hemsworth, must learn to protect herself from the evil queen, played by Charlize Theron, who wishes to consume Snow White's heart in order to appear forever youthful. The movie is in theaters June 1.
2-21 Jump Street
The cop series, 21 Jump Street, was the TV show that launched Johnny Depp into teen heartthrob-dom. The reboot, out March 16, features another heartthrob, Channing Tatum, and funny man Jonah Hill as undercover agents given the task of busting a high school drug ring, all while attempting to maintain their cover as teenagers.
3-Men in Black III
The first two Men in Black movies star Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones as alien-fighting Agent J and Agent K. In the third installment, Agent J must travel back in time to the 1960s in order to change the course of events that lead to the alien assassination of Agent K. Although both actors will be reprising their former roles, Josh Brolin will play Agent K for most of the film because the movie predominantly takes place in the past and features him as a younger man. The sequel hits theaters on May 25.
4-The Perks of Being a Wallflower
This popular Stephen Chbosky novel is getting the Hollywood treatment 13 years after the book's publication. In order to ensure that the film is a true representation of the book, Chbosky himself directed the movie, which tells the story of a shy high school freshman, Charlie, and his budding relationship with older girl, Sam. The main characters will be played by Logan Lerman and Emma Watson. The film does not yet have a release date.
5-The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is arguably one of the most popular novels from the Lost Generation period in literature. The book, which deals with the extreme frivolity and indulgence of the 1920s, was first published in 1925, and a film adaptation was made in 1974. The 2012 edition, out on Christmas day, will be directed by Baz Luhrmann and star Leonardo DiCaprio as the titular Jay Gatsby, Carey Mulligan as leading lady Daisy Buchanan and Tobey Maguire as the story's modest narrator, Nick Carraway.
6-The Hobbit: an Unexpected Journey
The Hobbit: an Unexpected Journey, directed by Peter Jackson, is the first movie of a two-part prequel to the epic Lord of the Rings trilogy. Many actors, including Orlando Bloom, Cate Blanchett, Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood will be returning to their respective roles from the Rings series. The first movie of the set of prequels is due to hit theaters on Dec. 14.
7-The Hunger Games
The Hunger Games could very well be the next big books-to-movies smash hit. The film interpretation of the first book in the futuristic series will open in theaters on March 23. Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence will portray the main characters of Peeta and Katniss, with Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson and Stanley Tucci in featured roles.
8-The Amazing Spider-Man
Although a trilogy of films based on the Spiderman comic series were just released from 2001 to 2007 starring Tobey Maguire, the franchise is receiving a serious makeover with The Amazing Spider-Man, to be released on July 3. Andrew Garfield will be taking over the role of the iconic superhero, while his purported real-life girlfriend, comedienne Emma Stone, will be playing Spidey's love interest, Gwen Stacy. So what's the difference between this movie and the Spiderman films released a few years ago? First off, this film has been described as far grittier and more character-driven. Additionally, Spiderman faces a new, more formidable villain: Rhys Ifans' The Lizard.
