In our last issue, this publication lauded the efforts of the College as it tried to juggle a myriad of issues including accepting nearly 100 students affected by Hurricane Katrina, implementing new, more stringent security policies and announcing and marketing a large-scale event for students.

Last week, the Loyola student body responded with overwhelming support during the first week of classes, organizing multiple fundraisers, generally respecting the sign-in changes and purchasing nearly 2,500 tickets to Dane Cook.

While the student body deserves a great deal of credit for its efforts, it is important to remember that there remain plenty of opportunities to contribute to the vibrant life of the college. With an Inauguration, a promising fall sports schedule, a fall concert, a large population of new students arriving on campus and freshman elections on the horizon, the mantra of "getting involved" has never been more true.

Last year, The Greyhound used this space to justify its reasoning behind printing a story about an alleged assault by a student. That decision and decisions like it were greeted with mixed feelings by the College community, with some feeling that it was beyond our scope to report on such matters.

However, it was and continues to be the responsibility of The Greyhound and other members of the press to report what we believe the public needs to know. It is important to report positive news on and around campus, but the nature of journalism demands that so-called "negative" news also be reported.

If incidents involving Loyola students, the failures of the administration or other news deemed controversial are not reported, the public is no better for remaining uninformed and unconcerned, allowing such actions to continue unrestrained. The unique environment of a small college makes this a sometimes painful process, but one that must occur nonetheless.

The Greyhound hopes that good news continues to show up in our pages during the remainder of the school year, having a strong interest as students in seeing the College and the student body excel. But we acknowledge that bad things may happen, and will report on them if and when they occur, believing it to be our duty to the community.
