The Loyola women's volleyball team was unable to pull out a win this weekend in the Cal Poly/ Best Western Royal Oak Invitation, as they lost the closing game of their tournament to the University of Portland, 30-22, 30-16 and 30-13.
Christina Greenup led Loyola with six kills, as Loyola looked out- matched and tired on Saturday afternoon. This could be due to the fact that Loyola had to travel the longest distance of all the teams in the tournament with no time to rest, as well as the very strong competition of the Big West Conference schools.
Marcellee Williams continued to stand out amongst the Loyola women with a team-high 13 digs to go along with eight assists.
Earlier on Saturday, the Hounds were unable to get a win against the tournament host California Polytechnic Institute as they lost 30-22, 30-14, 30-19.
The loss should not overshadow the superb play of Williams, a freshman setter, who recorded her third double-double in assists and digs of the season (20 assists, 14 digs).
"Marcelle really ran the offense well," said head coach Kristina Hernandez. "She did her part for this team."
Unfortunately for the Grey-hounds, Williams' performance, along with the consistently powerful play of senior Becky Corb, was not enough to get by the West Coast powerhouse. Corb led the way with a team-high 10 kills in the match.
This win gave Cal Poly a 7-1 record with their only loss coming from 7th ranked USC in their season opener. The loss dropped Loyola to the reverse, a 1-7 record on the season.
San Jose Sate handed Loyola their first loss of the tournament, on Friday as they swept the Greyhounds, 30-23, 30-25, 30-15. This was the first time these two teams had met, proving that perhaps unfamiliarity was a big reason for the Loyola loss.
Senior Jamie Arndt recorded a season high 22 digs as Williams had 24 assists.
The Hounds were slumping on offense as Corb had an uncharacteristic five kills. None of the women were able to get any sort of a rally going as Arndt was the only Greyhound to put up double digits in kills.
