Loyola Squares, a Hollywood Squares likeness held on Thursday, January 31, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. in Knott Hall, represented just one day of the third annual Jesuit Identity Week. The week, which was sponsored by Campus Ministry with the help of the Student Government Association as well as the Green and Grey Society, consisted of a variety of events to increase students' knowledge of our Jesuit roots here at Loyola College in Maryland.

The game consisted of Jesuit-themed questions asked by Associate Director for Judicial Affairs Christina Spearman. The questions were then answered by panelists Emily Rauer Davis, Fr. Chuck, S.J., Fr. Amiot, S.J., Fr. McDermott, S.J., Fr. Jack, S.J., Xavier Cole, Fr. Ruff, S.J., Fr. Conley, S.J., and Fr. Borges S.J. Two student contestants would then agree or disagree with the panelists' responses in order to "win the square" in this version of tic-tac-toe.

"I was approached by Don Pitcher and Connor McNamara to participate," said Davis. "I jumped at the opportunity." Davis attended undergraduate at Holy Cross and has been very involved with the Jesuits since that time. She now works in Campus Ministry.

Raffle tickets were distributed upon entry, and contestants were drawn in three rounds to participate in Loyola Squares. The first round was Senior Resident Assistant Christopher Nicolas versus a sophomore contestant, the second, sophomore Colleen Strong versus senior Jessica Faulkner, and the third, sophomore Matthew Butcher versus Mary Genetti. Morrell, Strong, and Butcher each won their games, leading them into an exciting final round for the prize of an iPod Touch. In a close game between Morrell and Strong, Strong pulled through to win the game as well as the iPod.

Loyola Squares pulled a fairly intimate crowd of approximately 25 students, while other events from the week such as Wednesday's Theology on Tap with Dr. Pomplun of the Theology department gained a larger crowd.

Theology on Tap, held at 7:30 p.m. in the Sellinger VIP Lounge discussed the "Jesuit ideal of Discernment" according to the descriptions released for Jesuit Identity Week, and allowed students over 21 to enjoy food and drink at the lecture.

Other events for Jesuit Identity Week included a Sunday Mass celebrated by Fr. Linnane, S.J. at 6:00 p.m., an 8:00 p.m. lecture on Monday, January 28 entitled "One Society, Many Cultures" in which students were invited to meet Jesuits from other parts of the world, a Jesuit High School Alumni Gathering on Tuesday evening, and a Wednesday afternoon Jesuit Residence Open House held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

In addition to the Theology on Tap on Wednesday evening and Loyola Squares on Thursday, the weekend concluded with a weekend Manresa Retreat from Friday, February 1 through Sunday, February 3 held at Rising Phoenix Retreat Center.
