That's what she said: The time for the real, hopeless romantics is upon us

This week's question isn't really a question. "Valentine's Day is almost here-- help!"
Valentine's Day is a time when everyone gets pretty critical of his or her current relationship status (or lack thereof). How many times have we all heard, "It's a Hallmark holiday" from our embittered classmates and friends who are less than thrilled to acknowledge that no one will be sending them gifts or overpriced chocolates. I've heard people refer to Feb. 14 as "Single Awareness Day" -- a time when some people are forced to come to terms with the fact that they are, in fact, quite unattached.
Hey, single does not necessarily mean alone. Okay, well, according to the definition, I guess it does, but my point is that it doesn't have to. Stay with me on this one.
Just because you don't spend a half hour on the phone every night deciding if you or your significant other will hang up first, your life is not void of meaning. College is the best time in your life to be on your own, uncommitted, free and able to do whatever you want.
Don't be hard on yourself or get upset by the fact that you haven't yet found a person that is perfectly and completely compatible with you. You're a pretty dynamic character. You're not easily impressed and you are definitely not about to lower your standards to be with someone who is less than everything you want and more. Good for you.
The greatest and most essential advice I can give you in all aspects of your life is this: Refuse to settle, even if all your roommates are in relationships. Even if it would be nice to have someone to watch movies with or take you downtown.
Yes, it would be nice. But it wouldn't be enough.
Refuse to let another person restrict, define, or otherwise have a say in your life. Think about all the cool stuff you do. Think about how bright your future is. Finally, think about how much you are already loved. You deserve everything, make sure you get it. Now, back away from the pint of Chunky Monkey and let's talk about your Facebook status options.
