The Greyhound Editorial: Support for New Dean of Education
Issue date: 4/1/08 Section: Opinion
Loyola College recently announced the choosing of its founding Dean of the School of Education, Dr. Peter C. Murrell Jr.
The Greyhound commends the selection committee's decision on the dean for the new Loyola school. We feel confident that Dr. Murrell will continue positive relations between the Baltimore community and Loyola, especially after the increased involvement through the 2006 Year of the City initiative. His research interests, which include the social and cultural contexts of urban schooling, exemplify the importance of education in an urban environment. As a college in Baltimore, students must not only be aware of the challenges facing the city's educational system, but the school they are trained in must also be creative in addressing the city's issues.
At this point, there are over 200 students majoring in education of the 3,500 currently attending at Loyola. With Dr. Murrell heading the new school, we hope to see an increased focus and compassion concerning the thousands of urban students that could use guidance in fostering a healthy attitude towards education.
The Year of the City Initiative gave students a slight sense of awareness in regards to some of the problems facing the city of Baltimore today. However, now is the time to use last year's program as a springboard for further endeavors with a larger impact and mesh service together with education to both inspire and direct future generations of Loyola students, education majors or not, to use their stature as a positive resource for others.
With such experience appropriate to dealing with today's most difficult educational challenges, Murrell will no doubt provide Loyola students with the resources they need to better understand and help with the topics concerning public education. We welcome the new Dean and wish him luck.
