The Loyola track team's field competitors, junior Melanie Mitchell and sophomore Kim Amaducci, highlighted the Goucher Track Classic in Baltimore last Saturday.
Mitchell said before the meet that when she is healthy, she'll compete well.
She didn't dissapoint.
Mitchell started by setting a school record in the long jump with a jump of 15-6 and then went on to win the event overall.
Following the long jump, Mitchell also collected a first place finish in the javelin with a throw of 33.2 meters. Mitchell placed second in the high jump andt took fourth in the shot put.
Surpassing Mitchell in the high jump was Amaducci., who cleared 5-2.25 and set a new school record along with a new meet record.
"This event stood out for me yesterday," head coach Brett Harvey said. "She's been working hard for so long to accomplish this and she finally did it."
The Greyhounds also placed first in the 4-by-400 relay. Angeline Diamond, Brittany Goodby, Nicole Gilhuley and Kristen Ford each ran in earlier events, making the first-place time even more impressive considering their fatigue.
The team fell behind (fourth place) during the third leg of the race, but Gilhuley was able to pull the Hounds into first place and Ford kept the lead in the final lap. This win was the first collegiate victory for each of the runners.
Individually, Diamond took second in the 200-meter in 27.66 and third in 100 in 13.55.
Goodby placed fifth in both the 100 and 200, while Gilhuley placed second in the 400 hurdles.
In the 3,000, junior Alexandra Salani and senior Bethany Gentry placed second and fourth..
Gentry used this meet to focus on setting a good pace, which wil be essential when she competes in the 5k at next week's meet at Duke.
The Greyhounds head south next weekend to Durham, N.C., where they will take part in the Duke Invitational.
