The Loyola women's track team split squads this weekend as the distance runners showcased at Bucknell on Friday, while the rest of the crew traveled to Rider on Saturday. It was not one of the team's better performances.
"Little things got in the way," coach Brett Harvey said. "For every mistake, everyone had an excuse. Excuses don't make up for bad performances. We need to understand our mistake, work hard every race, and walk away with our heads held high."
On Friday evening in Lewisburg, Pa., junior Maureen Wynne, who was competing in the Invitational divisional, crossed the finish line in the 5000-meter with a time of 18:34.39. While Wynne has been consistant, this past weekend happened to be one of Wynne's most unsucessful races.
"I know she could have been able to run this event a whole minute faster," Harvey said. "But when she has only had one bad race in two years, I can't complain that much."
While Wynne did not post the times Loyola was looking for, Kate Cervo and Alexandra Salani both had solid performances in the 5000 in the open division.
"[They] both run really well together and I want to keep them together," Harvey said. "They are there to push each other and I think they both need that."
Both Cervo and Salani were neck and neck the entire race until the 18-minute mark. In the last 400 meters Cervo used her great kick to break away from Salani. Both of the girls recorded personal records in that event, Cervo with a time of 18:50.91, and Salani with a time of 18:57.66.
On Saturday, the other half of Loyola's squad came out flat. The one event that stood out was the 4x100 relay, which the team posted a time of 53 seconds and finished fourth. While fourth place is a solid finish, Harvey knows the girls can do better. With this being the first time running this event this season, the girls know they need to work on cleaner handoffs.
In the field events, Kim Amaducci placed fourth in the high jump with a height of 4'11". Amaducci was clearing 5'5", but she clipped her heels at Rider. The team competes at Morgan next weekend.
